Lies told by dieticians…

To be fair, not all dietitians spread misinformation — many are thoughtful and evidence-based. But diet culture has definitely influenced the field, so here are 5 common “lies” or misleading messages people often hear (intentionally or not):

  1. “Weight loss equals health.”
? Reality: You can improve health markers without changing your size — and chronic dieting often harms metabolism and mental health.
  2. “Calories in, calories out is all that matters.”
? Reality: Hormones, stress, sleep, and emotional factors all affect appetite and energy use. Bodies aren’t math problems.
  3. “Carbs make you fat.”
? Reality: Carbs are your body’s main energy source. What matters is type and balance — not elimination.
  4. “You just need more willpower.”
? Reality: Bingeing and overeating usually stem from restriction, trauma, or emotional triggers — not lack of discipline.
  5. “Once you lose the weight, you’ll be happy.”
? Reality: Self-worth doesn’t come from a goal weight. Without inner healing, the same insecurities stay — just in a smaller body.
